What is St. John’s Wort?

St. John’s Wort, scientifically known as Hypericum perforatum L., is gaining recognition as a natural alternative to standard antidepressant therapies. This well-researched medicinal plant contains a key compound called hypericin, which interacts with brain chemicals to alleviate emotional discomfort, lift depression, and calm the nerves. Much like synthetic antidepressants, St. John’s Wort extracts have shown to relax and soothe the psyche with minimal side effects.


Benefits of St. John’s Wort

St. John’s Wort is not just beneficial for mental health; it also has remarkable healing properties for wounds. It is particularly effective for dirty, septic wounds and putrid leg ulcers that are resistant to healing. The antidepressant properties of hypericin, isolated in 1942, have been used to treat emotionally disturbed individuals. This compound increases blood flow to stressed tissues, reduces capillary fragility, and enhances uterine tone due to improved hypotensive blood flow.

While St. John’s Wort is beneficial, it does come with a caution. It can cause photosensitivity, where hypericin absorbed in the intestines concentrates near the skin, leading to allergic reactions upon exposure to sunlight. This can result in tissue damage, and in severe cases, death. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid strong sunlight while taking St. John’s Wort, regardless of skin type.
